A Mixture Model for Stock Prices

Building on a Lucas tree asset pricing model, this paper relates the tail risk of asset prices to the component-density of a Normal-Laplace mixture distribution and proposes a new method to measure extreme event behavior in financial markets. The hidden state of the model represents the underlying state of the macroeconomy, which follows a two-state Markov regime switching process. Conditional ...

Binomial lattice model for stock prices

Here we model the price of a stock in discrete time by a Markov chain of the recursive form Sn+1 = SnYn+1, n ≥ 0, where the {Yi} are iid with distribution P (Y = u) = p, P (Y = d) = 1 − p. Here 0 < d < 1 + r < u are constants with r the risk-free interest rate ((1 + r)x is the payoff you would receive one unit of time later if you bought $x worth of the risk-free asset (a bond for example, or p...

A diffusion model for electricity prices

Starting from a simple supply/demand model for electricity, we obtain a diffusion (i.e. jumpless) model for spot prices which can exhibit ’price spikes’. We estimate the parameters in the model using historical data from the Alberta and California markets, and compare this model with some others used for spot prices.

ANN Model to Predict Stock Prices at Stock Exchange Markets

Stock exchanges are considered major players in financial sectors of many countries. Most Stockbrokers, who execute stock trade, use technical, fundamental or time series analysis in trying to predict stock prices, so as to advise clients. However, these strategies do not usually guarantee good returns because they guide on trends and not the most likely price. It is therefore necessary to expl...

A Jump Diffusion Model for Spot Electricity Prices

In this paper we demonstrate the efficacy of a stochastic modelling approach involving both diffusion and a jump processes to describe the evolution of spot electricity prices in New South Wales. The model allows a deterministic time trend component and an unobserved process driven by both time varying volatility and occasional jumps. The structure allows us to cast the problem in a state space...
